The photos in the advert look fake or made by AI. How can I check?Beta*

Finding a home and applying
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.

Save the photo from the advert rather than taking a screenshot, then look at the details stored in the file. AI image tools from companies such as OpenAI, Adobe and Google are meant to label their pictures, either with a tag saying the image was made by AI or with signed "Content Credentials". Most listing sites strip these details when a photo is uploaded, though, so finding nothing proves nothing either way. Look closely at the picture itself: lines that should be straight but bend, no sockets, radiators or light switches, text and small details that smear when you zoom in, and furniture that melts into the floor or walls. Search for copies of the photo on other sites. Then ask the agent in writing whether the photos are of this home, when they were taken, and whether any were virtually staged or edited. Furniture added by computer is usually acceptable if the advert says so; hiding damp, damage or the real size of a room is misleading. View the home in person before paying anything.
