Finding a home and applying
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.
Only if the limit was made clear to you before you agreed to rent. A fair-use cap hidden from the advert and not spelled out in the tenancy agreement is likely to be a misleading practice, and an unfair term isn't binding on you. If there is a valid cap, ask to see the actual meter readings and bills behind the charge. Where a landlord resells gas or electricity, they can't charge you more than they paid for it. Complain to the agent, then its redress scheme, or get advice from Citizens Advice.
