Can I change the locks on my rented home?Beta*

Your landlord, access and privacy
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.

Often you can, because you have the right to control who comes into your home. But check your tenancy agreement first, as many say you need the landlord's permission. The safest way is to ask in writing, offer the landlord a copy of the new key for emergencies, keep the original lock barrel, and put the original lock back when you leave. If you have a real safety reason, such as keys handed to strangers, a break-in or harassment, say so in your request. Councils and the police take landlord entry without permission seriously.
