The fire alarm or fire doors in my shared house don't work. What should I do?Beta*

Repairs, damp and mould
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.

Report it to the landlord or agent in writing straight away. In a shared house (an HMO), the manager has a legal duty to keep the fire alarm system, fire doors and escape routes in good working order. Fire doors must close properly by themselves. Every rented home must also have a working smoke alarm on each floor, and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed fuel-burning appliance (apart from gas cookers). If it isn't fixed quickly, contact the council's private housing team, because broken fire safety in a shared house is something they take seriously. You can also ask your local fire service for advice.
