I think my live-in landlord has a hidden camera in the shared areas. Is that legal?Beta*

Your landlord, access and privacy
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.

A landlord who films people in their own home has to follow data protection law. Secretly recording lodgers, with no clear notice of what is filmed and why, is likely to breach it, and you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. A camera in a bedroom or bathroom is far more serious and may be a criminal offence, so report it to the police. Lodgers have fewer rights against eviction than tenants, so before you raise it, get advice and think about where you would go if things turn sour.
