My landlord is selling the house I rent. Do I have to move out?Beta*

Notices, leaving and eviction
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.

Not just because it's being sold. Your landlord can sell with you living there, and the buyer takes over as your landlord on the same terms. If the landlord wants you out to sell with vacant possession, they must serve a section 8 notice on the "selling" ground. That means at least four months' notice, not ending within the first 12 months of your tenancy, and still a court order if you don't leave. If they use this ground and then don't sell, they can't re-let the property for 12 months.
