How much can a landlord charge me for paying rent late?Beta*

Rent and rent increases
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.

Very little, and only after 14 days. Under the Tenant Fees Act a late payment charge is only allowed if your tenancy agreement includes one and the rent is at least 14 days overdue. Even then it's capped at interest of 3% above the Bank of England base rate on the overdue amount, worked out from the date the rent was due. A flat "£50 late fee" or similar is a banned payment, and you can ask for it back.
