What should I do about gas and electricity meters when I move in?Beta*

Finding a home and applying
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.

On the day you get the keys, take dated photos of every meter reading (gas, electricity and water if metered) and send them to the suppliers. That way you don't end up paying for the last tenant's use or their debts. If the home has a prepayment meter, the landlord or agent should hand over the key or card. Ask for it before move-in day, especially in winter. Debt left on a prepayment meter by a previous occupant isn't yours: tell the supplier you've just moved in and it must remove it. When you leave, do the same again, and close or move your accounts on your last day.
