What can I do if I can't get a guarantor to rent a flat?Beta*
Guarantors are still allowed, and with rent in advance now capped at one month, many agents have started asking for one more often. Options worth trying: a guarantor company (some agents refuse them, but many accept them); asking a landlord who isn't using an agent, since they are often more flexible; offering references from a previous landlord and your employer or university; your council's rent deposit or bond scheme, if you are on a low income or at risk of homelessness; and, for students, your university's own guarantor scheme. If you are about to have nowhere to live, contact the council's housing options team at least 56 days before, because they have a duty to help you.
