I paid rent for a period after my tenancy ended. Do I get it back?Beta*
Rent and rent increases
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.
Yes. Rent covers your time in the home. If you paid in advance for days after the tenancy legally ended and you handed the keys back, that money should be refunded. Ask in writing, setting out the end date and the amount worked out per day, and give a deadline. This is separate from your deposit, so it shouldn't be held back while the deposit is being sorted out. If it isn't paid, complain to the agent's redress scheme or make a small claim.
