Can my landlord refuse to let me have a pet?Beta*
Housemates, guests and pets
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.
Since 1 May 2026 you have the right to ask for a pet in England, and the landlord must not unreasonably refuse. Make the request in writing with details of the animal. The landlord must reply in writing within 28 days and give a reason if they say no. Good reasons include a flat that is clearly unsuitable, or a superior lease that bans animals. If you think a refusal is unreasonable, you can challenge it, including through the new private rented sector landlord ombudsman once that is running.
