My landlord wants rent in cash. Do I get receipts or a rent statement?Beta*

Rent and rent increases
Private renting in England since the Renters' Rights Act 2025, unless the question says otherwise. General information, not legal advice.

Paying in cash isn't illegal, but always get a written, dated receipt every time. Without one you have no proof if the landlord later claims you are in arrears. If your rent is paid weekly, the landlord must by law give you a rent book. You can ask for a full rent statement at any time, for example for a Universal Credit claim or a mortgage or loan application, and a landlord or agent who refuses is giving you good grounds for a complaint. Paying by bank transfer is safer, because the bank keeps the record for you.
