Rent Overpayment Interest Calculator
Increasing Principal Sum method · simple interest, s.69 County Courts Act 1984
Summary Worked the way a county court reads it: each overpayment joins the running balance on the day it was paid, and simple interest at 8% a year (County Courts Act 1984, s.69) is charged on that balance for the days until the next payment. A late first payment does not shift the rest — later payments are counted on the day the rent falls due.

Enter the date each payment actually cleared, rather than the date it was issued. Interest is then charged from the day the landlord had the money in their account, so there is nothing to argue about.

How the interest is worked out. Simple interest at 8% a year under section 69 of the County Courts Act 1984, claimed from the date each sum was paid. It is worked on an increasing principal sum: when each payment is made it joins the running balance, and interest for the days until the next payment is charged on that running balance only (balance × rate × days ÷ 365). Interest is never charged on interest. The same total results from charging every payment its own interest from its own date and adding them up. Whether to award interest, and at what rate, is for the court.
Statement — one line per payment
| # | From | To | Days | Paid | Balance | Interest this period | Running total |
|---|
If it runs on — the next twelve months
It carries on from the statement above with no gap and nothing counted twice: the first line IS the last line of the statement, figure for figure, and the second line carries the rest of that same period on from it. Everything after it is grey — those dates have not arrived. They are what the claim becomes if nothing changes: interest keeps running on the balance, and where the overpayment is still going on each further payment joins it as it falls due.

Day by day — the exact figure due on any date in the next twelve months
For the hearing. Find the date the case is heard and read the total for that day: it is the sums overpaid plus the interest earned up to and including that date, on the same basis as the statement above. It starts at today, marked in blue; every date after that has not arrived yet.
